A Model-Based Approach to Rounding in Spectral Clustering

چکیده
In spectral clustering, one defines a similarity matrix for a collection of data points, transforms the matrix to get the Laplacian matrix, finds the eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix, and obtains a partition of the data using the leading eigenvectors. The last step is sometimes referred to as rounding, where one needs to decide how many leading eigenvectors to use, to determine the number of clusters, and to partition the data points. In this paper, we propose a novel method for rounding. The method differs from previous methods in three ways. First, we relax the assumption that the number of clusters equals the number of eigenvectors used. Second, when deciding the number of leading eigenvectors to use, we not only rely on information contained in the leading eigenvectors themselves, but also use subsequent eigenvectors. Third, our method is model-based and solves all the three subproblems of rounding using a class of graphical models called latent tree models. We evaluate our method on both synthetic and real-world data. The results show that our method works correctly in the ideal case where between-clusters similarity is 0, and degrades gracefully as one moves away from the ideal case.

Application of Combined Local Object Based Features and Cluster Fusion for the Behaviors Recognition and Detection of Abnormal Behaviors
In this paper, we propose a novel framework for behaviors recognition and detection of certain types of abnormal behaviors, capable of achieving high detection rates on a variety of real-life scenes. The new proposed approach here is a combination of the location based methods and the object based ones. First, a novel approach is formulated to use optical flow and binary motion video as the loc...
متن کاملMultiway Spectral Clustering: A Margin-Based Perspective
Spectral clustering is a broad class of clustering procedures in which an intractable combinatorial optimization formulation of clustering is “relaxed” into a tractable eigenvector problem, and in which the relaxed solution is subsequently “rounded” into an approximate discrete solution to the original problem. In this paper we present a novel margin-based perspective on multiway spectral clust...
متن کاملApproximating K-means-type Clustering via Semidefinite Programming
One of the fundamental clustering problems is to assign n points into k clusters based on the minimal sum-of-squares(MSSC), which is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, by using matrix arguments, we first model MSSC as a so-called 0-1 semidefinite programming (SDP). We show that our 0-1 SDP model provides an unified framework for several clustering approaches such as normalized k-cut and spectr...

We try to extend the seeding technique proposed in [2],to the spectral clustering domain. We start with the survey of a sequence of papers on the connection between spectral clustering techniques and centroid-based algorithms. We show that the results in [2] can provide a bound for the rounding of the normalized cut problem. This raises an interesting question on the relationship between the see...
